Driver's License Information
For your convenience, we have provided a brief description of the basic types of driver's licences available to you in the state of LA. For detailed official information, please refer to your local Department/Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Types of Driver's Licenses
The requirements for obtaining a driver's licence, as well as certain traffic laws, vary from state to state, but a licence from LA allows you to operate a motor vehicle anywhere in the US. Driver's licences are divided into five distinct classes:
- Class D - this is the normal passenger vehicle permit. In LA, that is defined as "any single passenger vehicle or combination, except a semi-trailer unit, truck-trailer combination, tractor, or truck with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 26,000 lbs., bus or school bus."
- Class C - for any vehicle with a GVWR under 26,000 lbs. designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver). The Class C licence automatically qualifies you to operate Class D motor vehicles.
- Class B - for any single vehicle with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs., or any such vehicle towing another vehicle with a GVWR under 10,000 lbs. The Class B licence automatically qualifies you to operate Class C & D motor vehicles.
- Class A - for any combination of vehicles with a GVWR over 26,000 lbs., provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is over 10,000 lbs. The Class A licence automatically qualifies you to operate Class B, C & D motor vehicles.
- Class M - for a motorcycle or "any other motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the rider and designed to travel with no more than three wheels in contact with the ground", i.e. mopeds, scooters, etc.
