La. State law requires individuals 17 years old and younger (as young as 14 years and 9 months) to take a 30 hour drivers education course. Students will first complete the 30 hour portion of classroom training, followed by the required 8 hours of driving instruction (behind-the-wheel)*. Once the 38 hour drivers education course is completed, the student (upon passing) will receive a "Certificate of Completion". The student may bring that certificate to the Office of Motor Vehicles to take their written test.

This courses' objective is to instill into students of all ages that defensive driving is a way of driving your vehicle that helps you avoid collisions and accidents regardless of the conditions and/or the actions of drivers around you. To educate individuals about how defensive driving goes beyond the laws of the road. To explain the laws of physics as they apply to moving vehicles and help individuals analyze their driving choices and the consequences of those choices. To nurture a peace of mind that allows you to be much more likely to be able to prevent motor vehicle accidents, even those that wouldn't have been your fault. This defensive driving class was designed with knowledge and understanding of the needs of drivers “for hire“. Particular emphasis is placed on avoiding distracted driving. The class features short chapters, engaging animations and graphics, and multiple-choice quizzes for review; all designed to help you learn and remember the material and to satisfy the defensive driving training requirements of taxicab, commuter van, paratransit and for-hire drivers. Course Features: The defensive driving portion was designed for students of all ages with knowledge and understanding of the "Louisiana Driving Style". The class features short chapters, engaging animations and graphics, and multiple-choice quizzes for review; all designed to help you learn and remember the material. The dui/substance abuse portion of the class is conducted by a licensed addiction counselor who combines engaging topics and discussions with fun memorable group games.
