PLEASE NOTE: This page is a work in progress. Safety Town is scheduled to be presented in the Summer of 2011.
The Safety Town program is a Nationally Accredited Program which was established in 1964 by Doroth Chalad to promote early-childhood safety education. Chalad began the program after realizing a lack of safety education classes specifically tailored to preschoolers. She recruited teachers, police officers, firemen and other safety-related professionals to teach lessons based on their experiences, and formulated a curiculum that incorporated various interactive teaching strategies.
Victor Manning Driving School has created its own version of the program and brought it to Louisiana. We feel our experience in giving safety related classes since 1932 makes us uniquely qualified to educate your child on whats "safe" or "unsafe".
What is Safety Town
Safety Town is a safety awareness program held each summer for children who will be entering kindergarten or first grade in the fall with the goal of reducing accidental injuries and deaths. Each day, the program explores a different safety topic, including stranger awareness, water safety, fire safety, 9-1-1, pedestrian and bicycle safety, animal safety, personal / home safety and school bus safety. This program allows children to explore safety concerns in a familiar environment as they experience them first hand. Through movies, songs, and guest visits, the Safety Town program trains children to evaluate “safe” from “unsafe.”
Under the guidance of volunteer youth instructors and credentialed teachers, children practice and experience their lessons in Safety Town, a miniature city layout built to the scale of a small child. Safety Town is designed to ensure safety education needs are reflected in the structures and amenities of the town. Amenities include an actual railroad crossing, a residential and business area, streets with sidewalks and curbs, traffic signs, a parking lot for bicycles, a park and miniature buildings.
